yes, you need to buy a LAN adapter and attach it to the USB port in th back... there is no dedicated ethernet port though.

I have the LAN adapter and the lag/disconnections literally evaporated into thin air. i highly suggest it (i got my unofficial one from Bestbuy, but you can get the official one from nintendo's online store.

It took a few tries for my Wii to perform the systems update. It would be about halfway there, then fail. So I had the internet, but I couldn't use it. But eventually it worked.
