so if you want to start a conversation read the following guidelines
nerd (dorkish looking) - "what anime have you read lately?" "i missed naruto, did you watch it last night?"
prep (AE, hollister, abercrombie) - let them come to you most of the time...
goth (dark) - don't talk to them too often...
fun (smiling, clothes that suit them) - talk about anything, including your likes, they're sure to converse easily 
i made the last one up because i'm none of the other ones...

You can't go wrong with it, really, because most guys are going to have a favorite band/genre to talk about.
