| | | What Makes A Person This is something that a friend of mine wrote. I really liked how he put. I disagree with him a little, but I mostly agree. I won't put what I agree with or what I disagree with because it might effect people's posts. So post any ideas that you have about what he said. Weird Consciousness Theory by Danny Murray
"These are just thoughts - as such, I'd enjoy some constructive criticism not bashing the idea without giving any reason for it.
We're aware of all our senses at every moment. Sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste all blending together to make one conscious moment. Our memories provide a link for the current moment to understand the situation and make a decision.
I can't say I know how long these moments are, but I think that would be defined by the speed of the brain and its inputs. In essense, what I would propose is that all these momemts coming and going, all these seperate realizations, make up who you see yourself to be.
We all live in the present and the present is an ever changing thing. I know what I've already said might be weird to you, but this will be weirder. What I'm saying puts who "you" are into question. I'm saying that there is a consciousness (in a sense) "born" in each moment another that "dies". What creates the seamless reality are the memories created by your brain which provide access to points previous to that moment.
Let me try to provide some help understanding this idea with things you may agree with. We can all agree that who we were 10 years ago was probably quite a different person (I was only 9 years old then so clearly I was much different). So how about 5? Probably still different, but likely less so (For some it would change much less as they get older). How about 1 year, 6 months, 3 months, 1 month, a week, a day, an hour, a minute...a second? Were you a different person a second ago? You probably won't say so. How about when you're drunk or high? Or if you're tired, if you're angry, sad, scared, happy, ect. Does that constitute it being a different person or is it just you in a different mood? Well its clearly the same body. What's different about it? Different chemicals in the brain, different neurons firing. So it's the same body, but is it the same consciousness? I think it depends on how you define consciousness. Is it the same consciousness just in a different form? Or is it a distinct, yet similar consciousness?
In conclusion I'd say that a new consciousness is realized moment by moment which creates our reality. It makes you wonder what "I" really means, doesn't it? Now, please take note that I don't even believe this any full extent. I just enjoy entertaining ideas like these. Also note that this theory says nothing about how consciousness comes about (I won't believe anything about that until there is good evidence), just how it might work."

| | | It's pretty interesting. I suppose the distinction between identities becomes more difficult when you can relate to a past consciousness. You can relate to who you were a minute ago much easier than you can with who you were a year ago.

| | | The answer to the question is so simple. A person is defined by the shoes that they wear.

| | | My mama always said there's a lot you an tell about a person by their shoes. Where they've been. Where they're going.
