Actually, I think that if they remade Zelda 2 now, or at least make a new sidescrolling Zelda, it could actually turn out pretty sweet. Something along the lines of subspace emissary/2d metroid/2d castlevania... I think it could work.
I think they should make at least a few zelda spinoffs. (I know there are some already, but I mean spin offs that will explore new directions.) Like Zelda Turn-based, or Zelda tactics, Zelda RTS, Zelda fighting game, Zelda platformer, etc. It's true that Zelda doesn't seem to go well with certain genres like sports, or racing...but there's a bunch of different things it could try out.

To go far enough with a 2D adventure would be to let go of too many facets of gameplay identified as "Zelda-esque" for the game to be successful.
