So I was on my way to work today and I stopped and got a drink at the gas station. I was in my uniform. (For those who dont know I am a corrections officer.) I filled up my mug and stood in along line to pay for the drink. When I got to the counter, the attendant looked at me and told me it was free, because they didnt charge cops for their drinks.
I would like to know what you would do in this situation. If you would take it and leave, or if you would try to pay anyway.
Should people in Law Enforcement get gratuities for the job they perform?
I will tell you all later what I think, and what I did so I can hear your opinions on the matter first.
I see it as a conflict of interests. You expect others to pay for their drinks, why should you get yours free? Sure, you do a lot for the community but you should also serve as an example. Showing them that they have to pay for drinks but you don't is not what I would call a good example. If anything, it will draw people to that field for the wrong reasons; because I'm sure you know officers already have a lot of special permissions that come with their job. Of course, it's up to each officer to decide how they handle the situation; but personally, I see it as a conflict of interests. Kudos to you for doing what you do, though.
This is coming from someone who is going into a law enforcement field (not quite community policing; more investigative), but also has one cousin who is a Texas State Trooper, another who is a deputy, one uncle who is a retired officer in Ireland, another uncle who is a prison high rider, and whose mother worked for Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office, New Mexico. (It must be genetic)

When I worked at 7-11 a few years back, it was the policy that all Law Enforcement Officers were given their drinks for free. It was a way for them to want to come around more often and thus deter criminals from wanting to try and rob that store. Does this, then make it okay?

That changes nothing. It only makes other potential targets more vulnerable. A large part of why squad cars are marked as they are is so that people can see them. If they see all the cars in one place, what message does that communicate to them?

No...I think everyone should pay equally regardless of where you work or what you do for the community,Because it's a bussiness everyone who walks through the door to get something should pay to get it too.
I really don't care either way, you protect and serve, and them giving you a free drink is a nice way of saying thanks. But really, the first thing that came to mind was that it must have sucked to wait all that time in line only to be told you didn't have to pay.

I told the cashier that I wanted to pay anyway and payed for the drink.
However I am not that great though. I found out that this hamburger joint here in Utah gives half off to police. These guys are so effing good! and they are kind of expensive. So i stopped in on my way to work and got a meal! Half of baby!
I hate to double post so I just edited my last post. But then I realised it doesnt show up as a new post...so read above, and sorry bout the double post
I don't think cops should get free or cheaper stuff. The way I see it, places that try to draw cops with free or cheaper things are just like the sponsors of political canditates. The sponsors support their canditates so that if the canditate wins they can get him or her to sign bills that help them regardless of whether or not they actually help the general public.
